What is United Way?

United Way of Greater Fall River is a locally incorporated volunteer-led non-profit organization that raises charitable contributions to invest in programs and services that deliver measurable results in changing lives and building stronger communities.

History of the United Way of Greater Fall River

The United Way of Greater Fall River was established in this community in 1947 and incorporated in 1957 as the United Fund. Eventually changing its name to the United Way, the organization has been a leader in the community for almost 60 years, helping to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Fall River, Massachusetts and the surrounding towns of Swansea, Somerset, Westport, Assonet, Little Compton & Tiverton.

The organization has raised over $54 million since 1947, beginning with $127,881 raised in the first Annual Campaign, which was led by Atty. Lincoln D. Brayton. Through the years, the fundraising level has grown to over $2 million annually. This effort is a tribute to the ongoing volunteer leadership of the organization. Today's United Way continues its annual campaign success, with over 12,000 generous donors, along with a strong Endowment Fund and an award-winning Planned Giving effort. The organization supports 37 member and affiliate agencies which provide important health and human services in the community throughout Greater Fall River. The United Way’s mission to increase the organized capacity of people to care for each other is as meaningful and relevant as it was in our early days. Helping people to help themselves, and reminding our community that when you give, you change lives.
